Don Bell has been a busy man this fall. The Chairman, President and CEO of Bell Micro oversaw the acquisition of ProSys Information Systems and the appointment of former Ingram Micro executive Mike Grainger to the San Jose, Calif.-based distributor's board. Bell recently spoke with CRN Distribution Editor Scott Campbell about the latest intiatives and what's next for the company.
CRN: What led to former Ingram Micro president and COO Mike Grainger being named to Bell Micro's board?
BELL: We're always trying to find people to put on the board in various ways, whether it be for governance, financial knowledge, knowledge of the industry or good solid, overall management experience. I've known Mike Grainger for the past 10 years or so. I knew he had a very big job with the leading company in our industry. I thought he would make a good board member.

Half a century ago, Donald Bell was just another kid growing up in Montgomery, attending Sidney Lanier High School.
Today, his California-based company, Bell Micro, has annual sales of $3.2 billion and an international staff of 1,300 employees. At the age of 69, Bell spends much of his time in London working with his business partners there.
This month, his company will ship its 50,000,000th hard drive, he said, a major milestone in its history. Simultaneously, the computer parts distributor is increasing sales staff at its downtown Montgomery office.
"I'm just pleased with the youth that I had in Alabama, and I'm pleased to be back there every couple of months," Bell said this week in a telephone conversation from London. "What I'm really pleased about is being able to offer something back to Montgomery."
