Until now, most SMBs have been stuck using inflexible DAS (direct-attached storage) technologies such as SCSI, eSATA (external Serial ATA), USB 2.0 and FireWire.
But with the next generation of products entering the market, SMBs will be able to reap the benefits of networked storage.
For example, Bell Micro' Hammer Z-Box, recently reviewed by eWeek Labs (see "Z-Box: High-performance storage for SMBs" at eweek.com), is based on the Zetera technology and is priced starting at $1,299.

Joe Cousins, vice president of component marketing at Bell Microproducts, a San Jose, Calif.-based distributor, said it remains to be seen if the oversupply will have a far-reaching impact. "I think it's too early to tell," he said. "But we think it will be a more stable environment in [the third quarter than the second quarter]. We think the bloodbath is behind us, and pricing will stabilize."

Z-Box HZD4B 1.6 TB Desktop: $1,799
